There are many ways that attending a marriage preparation course could help you and your partner to improve your relationship such as:

1. Strengthened communication skills: your pre-marriage counsellor will observe how you and your partner interact and help you both find ways to improve your listening and communication skills. This will allow you both to feel heard and understood during your life as a married couple.

2. Learning conflict resolution skills: marriage preparation will give you and your partner the opportunity to discuss specific issues that may be worrying you prior to committing to marriage. Your marriage preparation counsellor will be able to help you both to find ways to resolve these issues if or when they do arise. This will help you to cope with the inevitable compromises that come with every relationship.

3. Awareness of role expectations: during marriage preparation, you and your partner will be encouraged to discuss what marriage means to you and how your current roles may change once you are married. In this way you can enter into your marriage with a clearer picture of your own and your partner’s expectations of married life.

4. Development of personal, couple, and family goals: pre-marriage counselling helps couples to discuss their goals for themselves, their relationship and their family in a structured and safe environment with an unbiased, neutral party who can mediate the conversation.

Relationships Ireland’s Marriage Preparation course is non-denominational course and is suitable for LGBT couples, couples who are having a Humanist ceremony and civil partnerships. It’s one couple to one counsellor and is one-on-one rather than in a group setting.
