What to Expect in a PST session

What is Psychosexual Therapy?

Psychosexual therapy is a service provided by couple counsellors or psychosexual therapists which focuses specifically on improving the sexual relationships of couples and individuals. Psychosexual therapists help people who are experiencing problems with physical intimacy, sexual dysfunction, low libido and other sexual issues. Sometimes there are medical or physical problems that can cause sexual difficulties. Often there are cultural, emotional or psychological barriers that can damage a person’s capacity to be sexually intimate.

What Happens in a Psychosexual Therapy Session?

Most people are anxious before their first psychosexual therapy session because they don’t know what to expect. Your therapist will know this and will do his or her best to put you at ease. During your first psychosexual therapy session your counsellor will take some general personal details such as your name, address, any medication you may be taking, and your GP details. Only appropriate and relevant information will be taken to ensure that the best possible help is given to you.

More specific details may be needed about you and your presenting problem. This may be quite in-depth in the case of psychosexual therapy because it is essential to take a full history assessment. Again, this is to make sure that you receive an appropriate level of care and to help you and your counsellor to sensitively discuss the root cause of your issue.

You can expect to be heard, listened to and respected during your sex therapy sessions. Relationships Ireland therapists are genuine caring people. They have an interest in you as a person and consideration for your problems, worries and concerns. All our counsellors have been selected with care to provide a fully rounded service to our clients. Although the therapists have common interests each therapist has something different to offer.

What Happens Next?

Following your initial assessment and first session you and your psychosexual counsellor will make a contract for the therapeutic work. If you or your sex therapist feels that another sex therapist in the centre is more able to meet your needs, you can if you wish change therapists. You will start to see your sex therapist on a weekly to fortnightly basis. All of the work you do during the counselling session will be based on talking, however, your psychosexual therapist may give you assignments to be completed in the privacy of your own home to encourage physical or emotional intimacy with your partner.
