What to Expect at Marriage Preparation?
Pre-marriage counselling is a great way for you and your fiancé to come together in a structured way to discuss your views on your lifestyles and your expectations of married life as well as reviewing your communication techniques. Your pre-marriage counsellor will be able to help you reach agreements about any problems which may affect the success of your marriage.
Booking Your Appointment
If you want to find out more about pre-marriage counselling or make an appointment for a marriage preparation session, you can get in touch with Relationships Ireland here.

Address: Relationships Ireland, 38 Upper Fitzwilliam St., Dublin 2.
After you book your appointment, two questionnaires will be sent in the post for you and your partner to complete individually. These questionnaires are designed to gather background information about your relationship and any particular issues or dilemmas that your relationship faces. You will be required to return the questionnaires a week before your appointment. The information gathered in the questionnaires ensures that your pre-marriage counsellor can tailor-make your marriage preparation session specifically for you as a couple. Your session will last 3 hours.
What Happens in a Pre-Marriage Counselling Session?
While pre-marriage counsellors work in different ways to help a couple to prepare for marriage, here are some common techniques that can be used in a pre-marriage counselling session:
- Asking you and your partner to write down your aspirations, hopes and expectations of married life. This can include issues you think your marriage may face so that you and your partner can consider and address these concerns within the session. Your pre-marriage counsellor can help you as a couple to manage any existing issues and identify potential problems and ways to resolve these in the future.
- Providing opportunities for you and your partner to voice your opinions and be heard by one another. Relationships Ireland’s pre-marriage counsellors are trained to encourage open and honest communication within couples.
- Demonstrating good communication skills. Your pre-marriage counsellor will observe you and your partner interacting as a couple and provide you with feedback about your communication skills. Your pre=marriage counsellor may also use techniques like role-playing to help you and your partner to learn how to improve your abilities to communicate.
