This Mother’s day do something nice

Mothers Day

Mother’s day is great! Ask anyone what the hardest job in the world is and they will tell you being a Mother! There are very few dates in our calendar that are more important than Mothers day. Just stop for a minute and think of the skills a Mother needs. She needs to be a nurse, counsellor, doctor, teacher, diy expert, driver, health and safety manager, and all the rest of the things I haven’t space to write in this blog. The sad truth is that we don’t appreciate motherhood , or parenthood very much at all. We tend to think it just ‘happens’. Yes we do need to take alot more time to say a HUGE thank you to all mothers who give more than we can ever say. Mothers worry incessantly about their children of whatever age. You never stop being a mother. Too many people of a certain age forget how difficult the job really is. We tend to say Mothers to-day have it so easy! REALLY? I don’t think so. It would be a great idea if we could organise a Mother’s day once a month. If we can’t do that ,perhaps we could do alot more to support them, especially new mothers. From my experience in the counselling room new mothers especially are under phenomenal pressure from everywhere. I’d love to see a ‘new mother’ support unit established. At this new unit mum could discuss all the stuff they don’t tell you about at the ante natal course. A place of peace where you can sleep, cry or just vent about any subject with no judgement. On this Mother’s day do something practical or give a present that Mother will use to ease the burden on her shoulders. Maybe it is tidying up the garden, doing the washing and ironing or buying the gift voucher she would never buy herself, and make a bit of an event of it. One of my favourites is having a type of ‘This is your life’. Each person gives two nice personal anecdotes that they remember about their mother whilst growing up. Ok this might not work for everyone, but if it can work for you try it out. A good many years ago a song called ‘No Charge’ came out. It might be worth us all to listen to it once again to remind ourselves of the selfless work and love mothers give to their children for the benefit of us all.
