Coping with Financial Uncertainty Can Cause Emotional Turmoil
Coping with financial uncertainty is, to quote the obvious, a major cause of emotional turmoil. It seems that there is never a time when we are financially stable. Money problems and the consequent breakdown in communication are near the top of the list as to why people contact Relationships Ireland.
Living with the on-going anxiety of money problems wears people out. We want to blame someone and shout at them. So we shout at the nearest person to us. Like many other issues we also need to take responsibility for our financial behaviour.
On a brighter note it has delighted me that so many of our people in Ireland are now a bit more savvy with their money. We no longer just pay up. We demand good value for money. Long may it continue.
The financial world is not for the faint hearted. Most of us ‘get by’. When we do hit problems they can seem overwhelming. They cause endless worry, illness and grief. We want someone to take all the pain away, hence the popularity of the lottery! Money can’t buy us happiness but it can sure reduce stress and worry. Knowing what it is like to live long term with such worries can give us an insight into how we cope with problems.
People come to Relationships Ireland for lots of reasons. One reason is for us to give them hope and a fresh perspective on their problems. One of the remarks we love to hear from a client is when they say ‘I never thought about it that way’. That is what we try and encourage. We also look for solutions. Financial problems can take over everything in family life, it’s important that we don’t let it ruin it.
When we know we have some kind of solution or alternative (which we may not like by the way), we suddenly have a breakthrough. We have great faith in people. To borrow another quote from one of my favourite films (Oh God) and I pass this onto you to ponder, “You may not have faith in yourselves, but you may like to know I have faith in you”.
