The Impact of Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment on Sex and Intimacy

For many couples sex and intimacy are important in maintaining the closeness and togetherness that are a key part of an intimate relationship. A diagnosis of cancer and its subsequent treatment has a huge impact on the sexual or intimate side of a relationship.

As a result, right at the point where the cancer survivor needs the support of a close and intimate relationship, the strength of that relationship may be undermined by their illness and treatment. Secondly, chemotherapy and radiation treatment all have an impact directly or indirectly on sexual performance and desire. Erectile dysfunction for example may arise from breast surgery. Pain and fatigue after treatment is also common and has an impact on your sexual relationship as does the stress and worry of treatment.

Intimacy consists of more than just sex and even where sexual performance is impaired it is important for a couple to be able to share intimate and caring moments. Good communication, knowledge and understanding between your partner and you are necessary to maintain intimacy and connection. While medical treatments can help, the support of a qualified sex therapist can be of enormous benefit in addressing the sexual problems and concerns that arise from cancer treatment. Our expert relationship and sex therapists are here to help.
