In this inspirational 2 day workshop renowned marriage and family therapists and Gottman Therapy certified trainers Sinead Smyth and Dr Robert Navarra will provide you with a research-based roadmap to help couples manage their conflicts, deepen their friendship and intimacy and support their life purposes and dreams. Based on the Art and Science of Love workshop developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman you’ll learn:

  • Research-based strategies to help couples successfully manage conflict
  • Assessments and effective interventions to help understand couples’ struggles.
  • Skills that empower couples to dialogue about their worst gridlocked issues
  • Methods to help couples process their fights and heal their hurts
  • Techniques for couples to deepen their intimacy and minimize relapse

Who should attend?

The workshops are suitable for therapists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers and other professionals who deal with couples and families and wish to develop skills to better serve their clients and for those concerned about a family member or friend experiencing relationship difficulties. The training will empower participants to provide support and help to couples and families in distress and, where necessary, make appropriate referrals to other professionals. Sinead Smyth, LMFT is a Certified Gottman Therapist and Trainer. Sinead trained with Drs. John and Julie Gottman and is certified by The Gottman Institute to teach Level 1: Bridging the Couple Chasm and to present Art and Science of Love Couples workshops.

Sinead formerly practiced as a Solicitor in Ireland before moving to the USA for graduate training in psychology in 1990. She is a trained child custody evaluator and a licensed Marriage and Family therapist in California.

She maintains a private practice in the San Francisco East Bay where she works with couples and runs clinical consultation groups in Gottman Method Couples Therapy for therapists. She can be reached at:

Bob Navarra, Psy.D., M.F.T., is a Certified Gottman Therapist , Consultant and Trainer. Dr. Navarra trained with Drs. John and Julie Gottman and is Certified by the Gottman Institute to teach Level 1; Level II: Assessment, Intervention, and Comorbidities; and the Art & Science of Love: A Weekend Workshop for Couples. He is a Research Scientist at the Relationship Research Institute (Founder and Executive Director, John Gottman) and Research Associate at Mental Research Institute. He is a Co-founder of the Center for Couples in Recovery at Mental Research Institute where he developed the Couple Recovery Development Model, a relational approach to addiction treatment. Dr. Navarra and Dr. Gottman are currently collaborating on research designing a randomized clinical trial integrating Dr. Navarra’s relational model of addiction treatment within the Gottman Method Therapy theory and framework. He recently presenting this model together in Seattle, Washington. He maintains a private practice in San Carlos, California.

Dr. Navarra recently co-authored a chapter with John Gottman titled Gottman Method Therapy: From Theory to Practice, in Case Studies in Couple Therapy: Theory-Based Approaches (Carson & Casado-Kehoe, Eds., 2011). Other publications include: Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Co-Morbidity , published in Gottman Level ll Training Manual (2009); and Family Response to Adults and Alcohol, in Family Response to Alcohol Problems, (Fischer, Muslow, and Korinek, Eds., 2007). He has presented his original research at conferences for AAMFT, CAMFT, and the Gottman Institute.
